A year ago, Intel announced its first 10 core CPU which took multi-tasking to a whole new level. Today, Intel announced its 18 core, 36 thread microprocessor which is been attuned to perfection by Intel themselves. It has been launched as a head to head competition to the AMD’s 16-core, 32-thread Threadripper.
Intel launched its fierce lineup of new Core X series processors. However, the highlight among them was The Core i9 Extreme Edition i9-7980XE. Intel also said that it is the very first Teraflop (A trillion floating point operations per second) desktop CPU.
The Core i9 Extreme Edition i9-7980XE is priced at a whopping $1999 and will begin its shipping later this year. Looking at the price tag, we can surely say that this isn’t a processor which we can see in average desktop computers. It is specifically meant for power hungry users which may want to do heavy tasks and intricate multitasking.
Intel has also unveiled other Core i9 Extreme Edition chips in 10, 12, 14 and 16-core variants. The first processor which goes by the name Intel Core i9-7900X will be having 10 cores with 20 threads. The 10-core i9 variant will come with a base clock speed of 3.3GHz, 13.75MB of L3 cache, support for 4 channels of DDR4-2666 RAM, Intel Turbo Boost Max technology, which escalated the frequency up to 4.5GHz, and a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 140W. It will be priced at $999, a significant markdown than its predecessor from the previous year.
The 8th generation of processors will offer a 30% performance boost than the 7th Generation. Multi-threading operations will be up to 10% faster and single-thread performance will increase by 15% with the new set of processors. The new processors, with improved I/O capabilities, will make use of X299 chipset.
All the Core X processors are built on an updated variant of Skylake platform which the Intel refers to as Skylake X. However, te two quad-core models at the bottom of the range, i5-7640X and the i7-7740X are built on Kaby Lake X.
A majority of the Core i9 chips will consolidate Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology which will improve overall multitasking performance and ensure that each independent core able to achieve an enhanced performance.
The latest set of processors is acutely targeted towards gamers or gamers who are content creators. These CPUs will help them to play games and simultaneously broadcast them without much hassle.
