Computer Sleep Vs Shutdown

Sleep and Shutdown are different features of an operating system. Get an idea about which mode is better to use, computer sleep vs shutdown.

It is an extremely common practice to shut the lid and walk off from the laptop, because when we return we are saved from losing time while the boot service is on. We save some time surely in our entire lives closing the lid before the computer has properly shut down, but when this time saved is weighed against the unseen threats; you will yourself decide to shut down your computer while you are leaving it!

Shut down, Hibernate and Sleep Modes of Computers

Before understanding the importance of not shutting down, you must know what the states are in which you may leave your computer in.

Shutdown- In this state power is switched off, the operating system is closed, and all the files and folders are to be closed. In this state,  there is negligible power consumption. But when you want to work once again with your computer you will have to start it all again and give it time for the booting. You will have to wait for the operating System to start and programs to be loaded.

Sleep-This state is also known by the name of Standby. In this condition,  the computer uses remarkably little power is utilized to keep the active memory. When you want to work you can get the computer working in a matter of seconds. It will start from where you have left it last.

Hibernate– This state consumes more power than the in shutting down state and lesser than in sleep mode. In this state,  the computer keeps the contents in a separate file in the RAM. If you are resuming back to the computer, it will reload this file from the RAM. This allows to be stored all the open docs, programs and files. It unquestionably takes more time to resume than sleep mode.

When These Modes are Suitable

These modes are provided for different purposes. Let us see the purposes are meant for-

Sleep mode-say you are just going off from the computer to get coffee, and will be away for a couple of minutes, this mode is suitable. You can resume soon after and this surely drains lesser battery than being alive.

Hibernate– hibernate mode is for that situation where you are going to be away for a couple of hours. For example,  it is preferable to hibernate in case you are going to sleep. It will take some time to resume when started and surely not suitable for a couple of minute’s departure!

Shut down– most people prefer hibernating than shutting down. But the software may not work properly if the computer starts from the hibernate mode.

So it is said that your computer needs to be placed in the correct mode depending upon your break.

The Advantages of Shutting Down

Many of us feel that it is not necessary to shut down. But for it is to be informed that Operating Systems need to be rebooted sometimes. Windows– one of the most common operating systems needs regular shutting down so that the OS rectifies it of the defect. Minor errors on the RAM or soft can be updated when shut down. Again if, the computer is sending on the sleep mode, the computer keeps heating up. This may decrease the life of the components of the computers. Again remarkably often power surges, and in case if there is something quite drastic, the computer in shut down mode will be harmed lesser than in Sleep mode. Shut down the state, the disk drives are also safe.

The best reason for shutting down your computer is energy conservation.
