Software protection services has huge importance but most of its services get unnoticed so learn here how to enable software protection service.

Software protection service is the service that provides protection of intellectual property from reverse engineering. It also makes sure you get a secure license enforcement and management system. This is a service that is provided by Microsoft. As a user you may not be aware of how it affects you because its presence goes largely unnoticed. But its absence can create a lot of problems for you because you will suddenly start getting lots of different kinds of error messages. So it is in your best interests to keep it enabled. If you disable it the operating system and licensed applications will not run normally. Here are some ways to enable it.

    download (35)

    I method

Click on the start button and on Search Program and Files key in Services.msc and press enter. This will open a window titled services. Find Software Protection and look at its status. To change the status click on it and on the General Tab change the Status type from Disabled. Now click on OK to confirm the change and close the window.

    II method

You can also change it in the registry. For this you have to go to the registry editor. Again go to the Start button and on Search program and Files type regedit. Press enter. The User Account Control will pop up and click on Yes to confirm. Be very careful when editing the registry as even a minute change will affect your computer. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicessppsvc and find the start registry key. Click on Start to change the value. If the value is 4 then it means Software Protection Service is disabled so change it to 2 for Automatic and 3 for Manual. You should be logged in as admin to make these changes.

    III method

Another way is to do it from Command prompt. As usual go to the start button on Search Program and Files type cmd. Right click on the cmd.exe icon to see the list of options. Choose Run as administrator. The User Account Control pop up will now appear. Click on Yes to confirm you want to make changes. Once you are at the command prompt type in the following depending on what type of change you want.

    For Automatic

    REG add “HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetservicessppsvc” /v Start/t REG_DWORD/d 2 /f

    For Manual

    REG add “HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetservicessppsvc” /v Start/t REG_DWORD/d 3 /f

All these methods can be used on computers running with Windows 7. For Windows 8 user the method is a little different. You will know that Software Protection Services is not enabled when you start getting messages like sppsvc services has not started up but failed. So, to enable software protection services in Windows 8

    • Download the batch file for Windows 8 that will help you in restoring the windows software protection.
    • Save the ‘Restore Software Protection Windows 8.bat’ file on your System folder
    • Ensure that you are logged in as administrator.
    • Run the file. It will make the necessary changes.
    • Restart the computer and if the problem was with Software Protection Services, it would have been solved.

Sometimes the problem can be because the sppsvc.exe file is missing from your computer. In that case you can restore it from the Windows 8 installation files.
