The New York Times is Suing OpenAI & Microsoft over Copyright Violation

The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in the United States, alleging both companies of copyright infringement. The Times has claimed in its petition that OpenAI and Microsoft’s chatbot AI tools like Bard and Bing AI were trained on millions of their copyrighted articles without permission. This includes verbatim excerpts and substantial portions of text directly copied from their work. The Times has further argued that OpenAI and Microsoft’s blatant copyright violation has caused immense loss to the revenue. It also further added that OpenAI and Microsoft are “free-riding” on their journalistic efforts without contributing to the cost of producing original content.

Apple Watch Sales Ban has been Paused (at least for now)

Apple resumed sales of the Series 9 and Ultra 2 models in the US after a U.S. appeals court temporarily paused the import ban imposed by the International Trade Commission (ITC). The appeals court will continue to hear the case after temporarily lifting the ban. It will weigh Apple’s arguments and eventually decide whether to uphold or overturn the ITC’s ban. This could take several months. Earlier this month, the ITC ruled that Apple infringed on patents held by Masimo related to blood oxygen monitoring technology used in the Series 9 and Ultra 2. This led to a ban on importing and selling these models in the US.

Amazon Prime Video to show ads from next month

Amazon Prime Video will start showing ads on its platform from January 29th, 2024. This marks a significant shift for the streaming service, which previously offered an ad-free experience to its subscribers. Prime Video will reportedly offer two tiers: a cheaper ad-supported version and a more expensive ad-free version. Amazon emphasizes that the ads will be “limited” compared to traditional cable television and other streaming services. The company claims that introducing ads will allow them to continue investing in compelling content and producing high-quality originals. Earlier this year, Netflix had also started an ad supported plan in order to deal with increasing pressure on its profitability.
