Tablets are rapidly becoming the personal computer of choice whether for business or pleasure and these highly portable devices are soaring in popularity. Over 80 million US users now own a tablet and there is no shortage of choice if you are considering one of the latest models. Here’s a rundown of the three main operating systems involved to help you make up your mind…

Apple’s high quality tablets

Apple’s iPad is still one of the main contenders in the tablet popularity stakes and the recently released iPad Air and soon to be released iPad Mini 2 are everything you would expect from Apple. Apple’s new tablets offer slimmed down stylish looks, faster A7 processors and that all important high definition Retina display. Apple’s tablet range has always been marketed as a slightly pricier tablet but they do offer a high quality product. The main downside of Apple’s tablets for some is that users are locked into using apps only sold by Apple.

Best Windows RT tablets

Microsoft has offered PC tablets for almost a decade and their Windows RT is basically a version of Windows 8 for mobile devices and tablets. Windows RT is excellent when it comes to multi-tasking and long battery life but has had some problems with flash drive compatibility and the minimal amount of apps available might be an issue for some. However, there are some good, affordably priced Windows RT tablets available such as the Surface RT and the beautifully designed laptop/tablet hybrid, the Dell XPS10. The Dell hybrid features a detachable keyboard and 10.1” screen, comes pre-loaded with full Microsoft Office 2013, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and is surprisingly affordable.

You could spend extra and go for the full blown Windows 8.1 Surface Pro 2 tablet, which features a 10.1” LCD wide-screen display, up to 512GB of storage and an extremely fast Intel 4th Generation Core i5 processor. At 907g and 13.5mm thick the Surface Pro 2 is one of the heaviest tablets available and seems to be designed more for home use than portability. This said, the Surface Pro does deliver on performance, as you would expect from the hefty price tag.

Popular Android tablets

Google came out with a winner when they introduced Android and even they didn’t realize how successful this mobile platform would be. To date there have been over one billion Android activations on devices such as Smartphones and tablets. There are some excellent Android PC tablets on the market such as the ultra-portable 7.7” Nexus, which features a 1920 x 1200 HD display, a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and provides users with access to 975,000 games and apps.

Android is also the mobile device platform to choose if you are looking for a hybrid phone and tablet. The Asus FonePad provides a two in one device at a surprisingly low price and this stylish device features a 7” multi touch screen and 8GB of storage. This hybrid runs on the latest Android Jellybean operating system and has a dual-core processor, which means it won’t be as fast as some Android tablets, but you will get the benefit of a multi-purpose and lightweight device.
