To begin with you need to download BackTrack from the official link http://www.backtrack-linux.org/.. Then you need to follow the steps mentioned below:

Creating Virtual Drive

  • Create a new virtual drive for this OS

  • Create it with any name, and type as Linux. The version should be Ubuntu or Ubuntu 64 bit. However, even plain Linux and Debian can also work.

  • The RAM required is 1 GB. This is because 512 MB is not sufficient to run any graphical user interface apps as they fall short for web browsers.

  • The disk size required is 20 GB. The installation of Backtrack has loads of suites that occupy space. Around 11.22 GB of space will be occupied along with the creation of 895 MB swap space by the BackTrack after installation is complete.

Booting with BackTrack ISO

  • Boot virtual drive as soon as it is created.

  • You would be asked to choose an iso image, and you need to choose backtrack iso image at this point.

  • You can find many options to boot up in the BackTrack screen.

  • You can select anything here, either the first item or the default item

  • Then press “enter”. If you have chosen the default image, then it is “backtrack text – default boot text mode.”

  • You would then be asked to enter login details and password. If you are at this juncture, this means that BackTrack has reached specific terminal. This takes only shorter than a minute.

  • Then enter root or toor as the login username.

  • Enter any password to login

  • When you want to start graphical user interface, you need to enter the command startx at the root prompt.

The command is – root@bt: ~#startx

Installation of BackTrack on Hard Drive

  • You can now find “Install BackTrack” icon on your desktop

  • The Ubuntu style installation wizard is activated and this is a guided process and all you need to do is to follow the steps. The steps will include select-Language-Timezone-Keyboard layout. Choose the option “erase and use the entire disk” for the menu “prepare disk space.” Then click “Install” option for starting the installation process.

  • The installation takes 20 minutes.

  • When you have completed the installation, you would be asked to restart the computer

  • Once restarted, the terminal comes again.

  • Login and enter the startx command. You can go to the desktop now.

Installing VirtualBox Guest Addition on BackTrack 5

  • Now in the virtualbox window Click Devices->Install Guest Additions.

  • An autorun prompt comes up.

If the prompt is not showing then in the terminal go to the guest addition disks mount location for running Program by coding these lines-VBoxLinuxAdditions. Run

root@bt:~# cd /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870

root@bt:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870# ls

32Bit cert VBoxSolarisAdditions.pkg

64Bit OS2 VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64.exe

AUTORUN.INF runasroot.sh VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe

autorun.sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run VBoxWindowsAdditions-x86.exe

root@bt:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.6_82870# ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

  • You can find a line “Building the main Guest Additions module….done”. This means the process is successfully completed.

  • Now you need to reboot BackTrack by reaching the desktop and for this keep the perfect screen resolution.
