Everything You Need to Know About Eco-friendly Computing

Green computing is a concept that has been around for quite a while and is one of the many ways that office and business are becoming more eco-friendly. However, with even more emphasis being put on the preservation of the environment in recent times, the concept is making its way to the forefront.

While there are a lot of green computing concepts being thought up and designed every day, a good first step is to make the most out of your existing computer to ensure it is eco-friendly. Here are a few practical tips you can use to take care of the environment while enjoying the fruits of computing technology.

When Buying a Computer

1. Buy the right computer system for your needs: What you want is a computer system that can grow with you. Getting a computer that meets your needs from the beginning ensures you will be using the same computer for a long time to come. You want to maximize the amount of value you will be getting out of your computer right from the beginning.

2. Go for refurbished computers: While there is a good feeling that comes with having a shiny new computer system, refurbished computers aren’t bad at all. These products will help you save money while also protecting the environment and are sold by just about all manufacturers and retailers.

3. Always think about the environment: Most computers these days are designed to have as positive an impact on the environment as possible or, at the very least, to minimize the negative impact of their manufacturing and usage. You should go for such computers when purchasing. Examples include Energy Star compliant computers, which use less energy when idle than regular computers. Others include customizable desktops with a modular design. Owning a custom desktop makes it easy to upgrade without having to buy a whole new system. The ability to recycle the computer should also be taken into consideration.

4. The packaging of the computer: This is something you should consider. The way computers are designed, their packaging needs to be a particular way to protect them from temperature, vibrations, and drops. You should, however, buy from manufacturers that are trying to do their best to reduce the amount of packaging required for the computer.

What About When Using It?

1. Turn your computer off: Your computer won’t see any negative impact from you frequently turning it off. On the other hand, doing that will save energy and may even increase the longevity of your computer. You should, therefore, remember to turn your computer off when you’re not using it. The monitor, in particular, will use a lot of energy is left on too long.

2. Have power management for your computer: This allows your laptop or desktop to minimize the amount of energy it uses by going into a low-power mode when you’re not using it.

3. Avoid using screensavers: Screen savers are energy guzzlers, not energy savers. They were initially designed to prolong life for the old monochrome monitors. They are, however, no longer in use and you, therefore, do not have to use screensavers.

4. Recycle: Many people don’t know this but computers contain many parts that are hazardous to the environment. Within a computer, you’ll find dangerous elements like Lead, Mercury Beryllium, Cadmium, and other chemicals such as Brominated Flame Retardants, and even PCV. The problem is that if computers are simply tossed into dumps or landfills, these chemicals seep into the ground soil and eventually into the groundwater supply. The end result is a concoction of dangerous chemicals in both natural and man-made water supplies.

The unfortunate reality is that we can no longer prevent some of the more catastrophic global warming consequences. Scientists have already confirmed that no matter what we do, we’re going to see some devastating effects over the next few years. Parts of New York City, San Francisco. Florida, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and other major areas will be drowned.

However, we can prevent it from getting even worse. By being aware of how computers affect the environment and doing what you can to save power and resources, you’ll be doing your role in protecting our ecosystems.
