Most Misspelled Social Network : “Frienster”
There’s something interesting that i came across yesterday while having a quick chat with a guy, who was asking me about popular social networks out there on the web.
He was a Frienster(yeah..Frienster, not Friendster) fanatic and was also an occasional Myspace guy but had hardly been used to (or even heard of) other popular social networks such as Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, Bebo etc
So, i told him about the new social networking godzillas which are slowly replacing the oldies and gripping their position with new innovations such as External Applications, APIs (Such as ‘Facebook Connect’) and similar stuff.
But then i realised that he was continuously misspelling his favorite social network Friendster as Frienster. Usually, such things hardly matter as web chats are generally full of slangs and SMS language but a noticable thing surfaced out when the other guy started defending his misspelled ‘Frienster’ during the chat.
Take a look at an excerpt of the chat that i had with that guy…
Guy : i use frienster, wat abt u ??
Me : Facebook, Orkut….Myspace but rare
Guy : hav u tried Frienster ? it’s coool
Me : Tried but not my type….also most of my friends are hardly on Friendster
Guy : friendster ?? isnt dat freinster
Guy : surry frienster..
Me : I didn’t point out but you’ve been misspelling Friendster(www.friendster.com) as frienster
Guy : Realy ?? i dunno.i m usin frienster for long…n its frienster
Me : so you type frienster.com in your browser ?
…….I suspected that Friendster might have bought similar domains(such as frienster.com) and may simply be re-directing this guy(and all others like him) to the actual site homepage but to my surprise, frienster.com was redirecting to Friendstar.com, nothing but a parked domain name. Then, how was he accessing his favorite social network Frienster.com (as he called it) for years. Read on…
Guy : nop. i use mozilla n google as my homepage. for going 2 frienster, i type frienster in google n get the site on top.
I tried myself and as expected, Friendster.com came on top when i misspelled Friendster (as ‘frienster’) on Google search. It’s a little astounding but after this little chat, i realised that it’s not just him but millions of others who access their regular websites by searching them on Google.
And the exact spelling is of no matter to these folks, as Google (and other search engines) don’t give them a chance to feel bothered (with unwanted search results).
This reaffirms that millions of people are accessing their regular social networks via search engines. And misspelling isn’t an exception at all. More than 3,00,000 folks search Google for ‘Frienster’. Similar searches occur for Orcut(Orkut), facebuk(Facebook) and many such popular web entities…
Moral of the Story…
No matter how precise you spell your favorite websites, search engines (specially Google) are an impeccable performers in this regard and never let you bother about those silly spell errors. At the end, its (Search) Result that matters, isn’t it !
