Amazon gets some relief : Shuts “Alexa Web Search Service” down !

November 27th, 2008 Comments Posted in shutdowns

When a product/service keeps taking a ‘maintainance toll’ on your pocket(’you’ meaning an ‘enterprise’) but does not respond with  surviving/respectable revenues then it will definitely be a relief for you to kill it off.

Such product/service shutdowns has been occuring regularly such as Yahoo(Mash),Google(Lively) and now Amazon(Alexa web search).

Quite recently,Google announced shutdown of Lively,a virtual world service by Google and now it’s ‘Alexa Web Search’ by Amazon. The reason is quite the same…Dumping off the useless service(low traction, high maintainence, poor revenues) More »

SearchWiki In,SearchMash Out : Is there a reason for this ’strange kill’ ?

November 25th, 2008 Comments Posted in shutdowns

I can’t say if you have heard of SearchMash or not but it was a Google’s service, intended for its own use for trying out experiments with innovative user interfaces, searching algorithms and other searching features before making them live at Google search.

But they’ve recently shut SearchMash down for no reason. And as they have recently implemented a big and rather controvertial feature called SearchWiki,it seems that there’s a reason behind SearchWiki-SearchMash come and go.

That’s for sure that the bucket testing was ON for SearchWiki features before getting into effect but SearchMash wasn’t the playground for it then why this “strange kill” ?

Launch of SearchWiki feature can’t be a reason for it as there’s no conflict of interests there. More »

Even Google can’t get rid of “Recesssion effect” : Shuts ‘Lively’ down

November 20th, 2008 Comments Posted in Utility focussed, shutdowns

Google has just announced that it is going to shut down Lively,a virtual world service that it recently launched(July 8).It’s been just four months of the service and Google has decided to blow it up as they are not getting the traction they expected earlier.

Although, companies like Google have deep pockets and can withstand under-unperforming products/services for quite longer span but Lively seems to be a victim of the current economic downturn, which even Google can’t get rid of.

Countless folks tried Lively when it lauched in July just because it was a Google product but Lively hardly became a recurring place to hang out for anyone.Even,Google didn’t seem More »

Why TechCrunch seems like FuckedCompany nowadays…

October 20th, 2008 Comments Posted in Utility focussed, layoffs, shutdowns

All the guys following TechCrunch can definitely realise a sudden rise in posts reporting laying offs, startup shutdowns, financial crisis, founder give-ups and similar stuff in the month of October…

Starting from a post reporting eBay’s layoff(1500 employees) on Oct 3 and continuing till now(7 layoff reported on a single day,Oct 17),this trend is not looking to end so soon.TC has even created a Layoff Tracker(to keep an account of all such layoffs)

This situation(may be called bubble 2.0 climax) reminds me of dot com bubble when cluster of dot-coms went bankrupt and laying off some staff members used to be one of the ways to cut costs and prolong the survival period of startups.

That time FuckedCompany played the role of a “reporter” to doomed/troubled dot-coms and this time,TechCrunch is looking to play the ‘lead role’ in reporting crippled state of tech/IT world.

The only difference lies in the approach… More »

Indian economy crippled - What-How-Why !

October 17th, 2008 Comments Posted in Business oriented, shutdowns, startup

Global / Indian economic recession is one of the hottest topics among everyone today. As most of thepeople are weak in economics, all of them are wondering what exactly is happening and where are we heading towards.

As a result of increase in oil prices, foreign exchange is flowing from India. People have sold more shares in the indian share market than they bought in the recent weeks. This has added to the fall of sensex to lower points.

About three months back sensex was at 17000 to 18000 points. But now sensex points, the indicator of indian business and economy has fallen below 10000. Yesterday market fell 606 points!!

This is a clear indicator that indian economy is facing BIG problems. As a result, many companies like Jet Airways,TCS,Satyam and many others have laid off their staffs, the number of foreign tourists to india has dropped down, companies are cutting down compensations and perks etc. More »
